It was four years to this day that James Dewitt Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla left us, but his memory lives on in the iPods, on the turntables, and in the ears of hip-hop heads everywhere. He was one of the most influential producers of this era, and a big reason why I love hip-hop. I don't think a day goes by that a Dilla joint isn't blasting in my headphones while on the bus. There's just something about a Jay Dee beat that makes me forget about everything else going on and just focus on the music. It takes a special producer to do that, and I just want to say thanks and rest in beats. J DILLA CHANGED MY LIFE

The biggest sports event of the year was yesterday and saw the New Orleans Saints stick it to the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 for their first ever Superbowl. Drew Brees came away with the MVP trophy and silenced all the critics who say he isn't an "elite" quarterback. I have never heard the "Who Dat" chant more in my life than yesterday, and I don't mind it one bit. Just as much as I enjoyed watching the Saints win and the city of New Orleans rejoice after all it's been through, it doesn't compare to the feeling I get seeing Peyton Manning lose. I have nothing against Peyton, I think he's one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, it's just I hate him because he deserves to win (if that doesn't make any sense, don't worry about it). After this Superbowl, the term "Pick 6" will never have the same meaning again, especially to number 18.

GRAMMY FAMILY

This year's Grammy awards were this past weekend and I've learned a few things. Beyonce wins a lot, I know little to nothing about country and alternative music (who the hell is Zac Brown Band), and rap super groups love to steal the show. Take 2009 for instance where four of this era's most notable rappers appeared (with an about to burst M.I.A.) to perform "Swagger Like Us", undoubtedly one of the hottest tracks of that year. 2010 was no different when everyone's new favourite rapper, Drake, appeared along side Lil' Wayne and Eminem to perform "Forever".

I know what you're thinking, "Where was Kanye?!" I have no idea, but I'm sure you can make your own Taylor Swift related joke to account for his absence. Both performances helped make the near 4 hour show a lot more entertaining, and give hip-hop heads like me something to look forward to. I wonder who will be taking the stage next year? Wu-Tang reunion? The Fugees maybe? Shoot i'd be happy if they did a Murder Inc. tribute. I guess we'll have to wait and see. In the meantime enjoy the performances without CBS's over the top censoring.

Jay-Z has teamed up with Rhapsody and MTV in anticipation for The Blueprint 3 with an ad campaign to help promote the album (as if it needs it). This 60 second spot is just a reminder of how important albums were in hip hop before ringtones, blogs, leaks, auto-tune and a bunch of other shit ~~unfortunately~~ happened. Recreating every one of his album covers flawlessly, Hov shows you to be the best you gotta put in the work. Respect the discography.

WHY: Besides Street Fighter, Tekken is the only other fighting franchise I mess with. There's just something about the capoeira fighting style that makes kicking ass look so good. Where else can you see a robot droid fight a panda bear in an ancient temple?

WHY: I'm not going to lie, I got hooked on the last installment of this game. There was just something about getting a well set-up goal, until someone found one of the biggest bugs in video game history. No one scores that many wrap-around goals, but this year with over 250 new goalie animations that issue should no longer be a problem.

3. NBA 2K10

GAME: NBA 2K10
RELEASE DATE: 10/06/09
WHY: The 10th game in the NBA 2K series has the potential to be the best yet. The king of basketball games for the past few years has made EA's Live look like a budget series title. The people at 2K sports have never really made drastic adjustments to the game, and for good reason because they have never really had to. I'll give a pass on the cover athlete.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

WHY: There are hundreds of titles claiming to be the realest depiction of war in the first-person shooter genre, but the COD series has them all beat. Usain Bolt made himself a household name in last summer's Olympics in Beijing. He would win the race and play it up for the crowd with 15m to go. The Jamaican Lightning Bolt has not let up since. This week at the 2009 Track and Field World Championships in Berlin, Bolt did not only break the record in the 100m but also in the 200m. It almost seems effortless for Usain and makes me wonder if he'll even pick up the bobsled, because apparently sprinters make the best bobsledders. FEEL THE RHYTHM!

I don't remember the last time a pro-athlete had seven signature shoes on the same brand since Mike. Last Friday, the 7th day of August, Bron Bron introduced the world to the Nike Air Max LeBron VII. Maybe these will be the pair of kicks he'll be in when he finally hoists his first championship above his head, but my money is on the Bulls like every year. The shoe drops on October 24th with a $160 USD price tag.

I definitely think this is an upgrade from the King's last signature shoe the Nike Zoom LeBron VI. With the success of the Zoom Kobe 4, Lebron decided that the lighter Flywire approach was the way to go. The details in the LeBron VII from the 'Twenty and Three' on the toe of each shoe, the 7 FW strands and LeBron's signature on the tongue, and the 23 FW stripes on the midsection are nice touches to this signature model.

Just like Forrest Griffin I can accept that I lost (more later), in terms of picking Kenny Florian to beat BJ Penn of course. In the City of Brotherly Love, the Prodigy showed why he is the master and why KenFlo is just another student in the lightweight championship bout. In control of the fight from the very start with great takedown defense, BJ Penn secured the rear-naked choke at 3 minutes, 54 seconds of the fourth round retaining his title and his spot atop the 155 pound weight division.

Anderson Silva def. Forrest Griffin (KO punch)

For all those Anderson Silva haters out there I just have one thing to say, 'Are you not entertained?'. He proved just why he is considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in all of mixed martial arts at UFC 101. After knocking Griffin down twice with a flurry that would make Rocky proud, and toying with Forrest dropping his hands and simply bobbing and weaving his head to avoid punches, Silva laid out the former light heavyweight champion with one jab 3 minutes, 23 seconds into the first round. KO of the ~~Night~~ Year (at least a candidate).

I guess Rashad Evans is part of the film crew until the next Ultimate Fighter starts. Who knew?

This Saturday July 11th is UFC 100 where there will be two title fights on an overall stacked card. Thiago Alves will finally get his 'shitle tot' against GSP for the Welterweight Championship. Alves is coming off impressive defeats of Josh Koscheck and Matt Hughes, while Georges is of course coming off his win against Baby Jay. The Heavyweight Championship will also be up for grabs when champion Brock Lesnar takes on Frank Mir for the second time. Mir won the first contest by kneebar, but Lesnar will have the chance to avenge his loss and defend his title for the first time after raining hammerfists on Randy Couture for the belt.

When dealing with a new Lupe Fiasco project two things are constant, an intriguing concept followed up by a dope album. I've been waiting a while for this since The Cool. This short film entitled The L.A.S.E.R.S. Manifesto is the inspiration and direction Lupe seems to be going towards this time around. To say a rapper is 'keeping it real' is as cliche as you can get, but its refreshing to hear something not involving Patron, Halle Berry, swag(ger), or accompanied by some sort of dance.

The track in the background is the instrumental to Lupe's first single off LASERS entitled Shining Down featuring Matthew Santos which drops this Tuesday July 7th on iTunes. Check out Lupe's new site for more info.

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE BALLIN'

I didn't know mediocrity cost 200 million dollars. One of my favorite reviews for the movie was, "On every level this movie is as bankrupt as GM". Uh burn! Even if the movie was a shot-for-shot of all the slow-motion Megan Fox running scenes played on loop for two hours, it wouldn't have made it any better but that's neither here nor there. What is here are 3 new kicks from the Nike House of Hoops paying tribute to Bumblebee of the Autobots and Soundwave & Megatron of the Decepticons. Luckily Nike didn't decide to make a pair of Zoom Mudflaps or Air Skids, the two most useless and rather offensive Autobots in the history of Transformers. Along with each pair of kicks comes a collectible box reminiscent to those of the Hasbro toys from the 80's.

The NBA Finals are in full swing and today EA Sports announced their cover athlete for NBA Live 10 as none other than Dwight Howard. Last week 2K Sports with the help of Spike Lee announced their cover athlete to be ~~former MVP~~ Kobe Bryant. The past few years NBA 2K > NBA Live although some may disagree. I grew up with the Live franchise, my first PS game was NBA Live 98 with Tim Hardaway on the cover, and at the time I thought this was the greatest game ever made. So gamers and basketball fans out there will just have to wait and see which title will reign supreme.

All Lebron and Jordan comparisons must cease immediately. Props to King James for winning the MVP award this season which I couldn't see going to any other player. But once they start pitting stats and accolades of the 2 greatest basketball players of their respective generations it gets me madder than when the Lakers win. In my opinion comparing the two is the equivalent of comparing an ice cream cake to a full tank of gas. Both are good, hell both are amazing in the right context, but its useless in trying to figure out which option is "best". Lebron is Lebron and Jordan is Jordan. Nuff said.

To commemorate King James' achievement, he will be wearing a special "MVP" edition of his Zoom Lebron VI shoe tonight to open up the series against the Hawks. Fans at the Q will also be receiving limited edition "Witness MVP" shirts. These items will be available at House of Hoops locations in the States and Nikestore.com online.

Complex Magazine and Nah Right, in honour of last month's NCAA tournament, set up a 64 rapper bracket tournament called STYLE WAR to determine once and for all whose style reigns supreme in the hip-hop world. Everyone from Lupe Fiasco to the Fresh Prince, and Andre 3000 to Pharrell were included in this all-time battle of dapper rappers. After about a month the winner was determined by fans-vote and to no-ones surprise KANYEEZY came away with the style crown beating BIG BROTHER HOV with 77% of the vote. Personally I thought Slick Rick had this one in the bag, but you can't be mad at Mr. West. Except for that shutter shades thing, man you couldn't see shit.

UFC 98: RYU vs. BALROG

Well actually its the much-anticipated light heavyweight title bout between undefeated champion "Sugar" Rashad Evans and undefeated challenger Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida. The May 23rd bout has the potential to be one of the best light heavyweight fights of the year and I can definitely see this fight going either way. As some people may know, I am quite the fan of the Rashad Evans celebratory "KNOCKED YOU THE F OUT DANCE" (0:38 into his clip) and would love to see it after his fight with Machida. We're not biased here at hypeFEAST in any way so to help you pick a wiener here is Evans' knockout of Chuck Liddell and Machida's last minute knockout of Thiago Silva.

What a few weeks of college basketball it has been! If I learned anything from this year's tournament it is this: in a battle between SPARTANS and CARDINALS, pick King Leonidas and company FTW! What was I thinking? Proving to myself a flock of birds could go far in this tournament, number 1 overall seed in the country my ass! Well ahead of me due to my competitive side and placing a bet on this tournament with my cousins: a month of kitchen duty and treating the champion (*sigh) to a meal of epic proportions. "Rap star T.I. was sentenced in Atlanta federal court Friday to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay a $100,300 fine on weapons charges related to purchasing machine guns and silencers.

The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, reached the terms of the sentence in a plea agreement with prosecutors last year.

"I would like to say thank you to some, and apologize to others," Harris said at his sentencing."

NBA RACE TO "MP3"

With the season wrapping up and the playoff picture getting set, the talks of MVP or as my man Ali G. would say "MP3" rage on. A case can be made for a handful of players but this year the MVP belongs to either: THE KING or BLACK MAMBA. No offense to FLASH who posts 30 a game like its nothing, CP3 who flirts with a triple double nightly and D12 superman himself leading his team near the top of the east; BUT kobe and lebron's stats and team records don't lie. Top of the their conferences and of the basketball world in my opinion (no homo).

MY 1ST OILERS GAME

So to all of those who know me this would probably be the last place you would think to find myself on a Tuesday night, but as a right of passage for all Edmontonians I just had to check out an Oilers game (plus who would turn down free tickets?). I don't know much about hockey other than that Gretzky guy was pretty good back in the day, that Alexander Ovechkin is the Lebron James of the NHL and some dude named Conklin sucks according to Oilers fans, but tonight's game was an experience.

One thing about the Oilers that I've noticed from the odd time I catch Sportscentre or theScore daily show in the morning, and after tonight is that they suffer from a severe case of Nick Anderson Syndrome (Magic vs. Rockets 94/95 Finals go wiki it). They'll have the lead going into the 3rd period, but will eventually lose the lead and the game either at the end of regulation or overtime. With the end of the season a few weeks away and the possibility of a playoff spot, all we can do is hope the Oilers won't need the Heimlich Maneuver any time soon.
